Cockatiel vs Budgerigar, which is the best first bird?
Reviewed by Hamza, Avian Care Lead at Dubai Birds since 2018
Cockatiels and Budgerigars (budgies) are the two most popular pet birds in the world, and the two we recommend most often to first-time UAE owners. Both are friendly, affordable, and adaptable, but they suit slightly different homes.
Our recommendation
Choose a Cockatiel if you want a slightly larger, cuddlier bird that whistles tunes and bonds deeply, and you can offer 1-2 hours of daily interaction. Choose a Budgerigar if you have less space, want the most affordable starter bird, or are happy with a more flock-oriented bird that you can keep in a pair.
