The African Grey Parrot is widely considered the most intelligent parrot species and one of the most intelligent animals on the planet. Renowned globally for their extraordinary cognitive abilities, they can learn vocabularies of 1,000+ words, use language in context, count, identify colors and shapes, and even express emotions. The famous research subject Alex demonstrated cognitive abilities comparable to a 6-year-old child. African Greys are sensitive, thoughtful birds that form deep emotional bonds with their owners. They are observant and intuitive, often surprising their owners by commenting on situations or mimicking sounds with uncanny accuracy. Their beautiful silver-grey plumage and striking red tail give them an elegant, distinguished appearance. They require an experienced, patient owner who can provide extensive mental stimulation and emotional support. Lifespan is 40–60 years.
Diet
A diet centered on high-quality pellets (about 70%), supplemented with calcium-rich vegetables (kale, broccoli, bok choy), Vitamin A-rich foods (sweet potato, carrots, red peppers), fresh fruits, and limited nuts. African Greys are prone to calcium deficiency, so supplementation may be needed.
